Our ‘GREEN CLEAN’:  30 July 2022  –  THANK YOU very much!

Sincere thanks are due to those kind and energetic parishioners who enthusiastically turned out to rake up the dead leaves and brown grass on The Green. It does all look ‘cleaner’. Hopefully, with lower temperatures and lots more rain, the grass may soon look healthily green again!

We are very grateful to you for assisting with this extra task, this summer.

Team Vicar of St Paul’s Walden with Preston:

A Letter From Our Team Vicar

September is often a month of new starts.

A new term begins for our children, and maybe we think back to our school days and the start of the September term – with a mixture of excitement and trepidation: what will it bring?

For our country, there is the prospect of a new prime minister and a promised new start to our national discourse. And there is the unwelcome novelty of unimaginably high energy bills which will bring real suffering to many.

It is easy to say that what really counts is our response to what is new, whether good or bad. But I think it is nevertheless profoundly true. In the end, we cannot navigate a life free of change or challenge or hardship, of cancer or loss of sight, hearing or loved ones.

But what we can try to do is to hold onto an assurance that, as the great Julian of Norwich put it: ‘All shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well’. Not escapism this, but a holding onto the Christian promise of hope based on faith and love, of Jesus as the light in our darkness.

Meanwhile, I shall look forward to seeing many of you with your pets at the annual Pet Service on Sunday 25 September at 11.00 am in All Saints.

With every blessing,
Stephen

Heartstock

I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the people involved in the Heartstock day at the Red Lion on the 3rd of July.

I can now confirm that the sum of £5735.00 was raised and that the whole of this amount was transferred to the British Heart Foundation.

As you know, my dear wife Elizabeth died of a heart attack on the 9th of November last year, her death was totally unexpected and just illustrates how fragile life can be. She was a “one off” and all of us have missed her lively and cheerful personality.

I would like to thank all my fellow musicians, who freely gave their time and particularly my colleagues from SG4 who supported me totally. Special mention should be given to Lisa Chambers who helped me with the admin, all things Liz would have done for me in a previous life. Thanks to Ray and Jo who kindly donated the day’s food takings and to the directors of the Red Lion who made a very generous donation to the fund. A mention for my dear friends Richard and Sarah Gill, who broke into their Spanish holiday – Richard to play in his old band and Sarah & Katie to sell raffle tickets and shake the collection bucket with Lisa and Katie Chambers. Top friends.

My final thanks go to Robin King for not only playing in one of the bands, but also providing the inflatable backdrop to the stage, and the sound system. He is a kind and generous man and repeated the whole exercise for the recent homeless charity day. To the people of Preston and all the visitors to Heartstock, your kindness knows no bounds and you have my utmost respect.

Paul Madden.
